Recently I saw the trailer for Will Ferrell’s New movie Semi-Pro and I decided to write up my favorite Sports Comedies. Here’s my list of the funniest Sports Comedies, I guess a few wouldn’t really be considered sports movies but just go with me on this.

15. BASEketball

While not a real sport, this movie is one of the best sports movies. They make fun of most major sports, athletes, and everything else they could think of. Matt Parker and Trey Stone, the creators of South Park, play Joe Coop and Doug Reemer, two losers who create a sport that combines basketball with the rules of baseball. This has a ton of toilet humor but is extremely hilarious.

14. Necessary Roughness

Due to NCAA restrictions, The Fighting Armadillos have to form a team from their student body. No recruiting and no scholarships lead to a rag tag bunch all led by 34 year old farmer Paul Blake (Scott Bakula) and hilarity ensues. There are quite a few laughs from the Dean, the coach, and the whole team.

13. Poolhall Junkies

Maybe Pool isn’t a sport but it’s shown on ESPN so it gets a spot on this list. When Johnny’s little brother Danny gets in trouble after a pool hustling gone wrong, Johnny must come back to the game that he left to cancel his brothers debt. Although this sounds like a drama, this movie is filled with laugh out loud scenes from Christopher Walken, Mars Callahan, and many more. If you like pool, you’ll love this movie.

12. The Waterboy

If you can get past the annoying voice that Adam Sandler uses the entire movie, then you can really enjoy this. Bobby Boucher is the waterboy for a struggling college team when the coach realizes he has a unique tackling ability and puts him on the team. There are hilarious lines and some funny slap stick comedy.

11. The Big Lebowski

While bowling isn’t the main subject of this movie, my buddies and I can’t go bowling without watching it. The Dude gets his rug pissed on and gets wrapped up in a case of mistaken identity, but all he wants to do is bowl man. John Goodman plays his hilariously crazy friend Walter who relates everything to Nam. Why am I bothering telling you this, you’ve either seen it or you haven’t, and if you haven’t, then dammit you should.

10. Stickmen

The second pool movie to make the list, this gem comes from New Zealand and is like a Guy Ritchie movie about pool. When their favorite pubs owner enters them in a high stakes pool tournament they have to play to keep him, and themselves alive. There are great and hilarious pool scenes and again if you like pool you’ll love this movie. Hell you might like it even if you don’t like pool.

9. A League of Their Own

Baseball finally makes an appearance on the list. When World War II is happening, a company decides that people need entertainment, therefore it’s time for women to play major league baseball. The movie follows a team coached by Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) who is a drunk and washed up ex MLB star. This movie is hilarious and Tom Hanks performance is classic. “THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL”

8. Happy Gilmore

Adam Sandler’s second appearance on the list. Happy is a hockey player who can’t skate, when challenged to a long drive contest he learns he can blast the ball and then takes on the pro’s. The movie is hilarious and ridiculous, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t seen movie so excuse my small description.

7. Kingpin

When a down and out old bowling pro with one hand finds an Amish prodigy, he talks him into comming to Reno with him for the bowling world series. This Farrelly brothers movie has amazing comedic performances from Randy Quaid, Woody Harrelson, and Bill Murray. Really there’s no way to describe this movie, it’s hilarious.

6. The Replacements

When the NFL goes on strike mid-way through the season, the league brings in scabs to take the striking players places. Gene Hackman plays the coach and his team is rounded out by a crazy cop, played by John Favreau, a fast but butterfinger wide reciever, played by Orlando Jones, and a former college quarterback, played by Keanu Reeves. The rag tag team is full of laughs and crazyness. If you haven’t seen it and don’t mind a bit of editing, you can watch this on TBS pretty much every weekend.

5. Major League

When a former stripper takes charge of the Cleveland Indians she decides to put together the worst team possible. The players are either washed up, in prison, or just plain goofy. This movie is great and has awesome performances from Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, in a rare comedy roll, and Tom Beringer. You’ll never hear the song “Wild Thing” the same way again.

4. The Longest Yard (1974)

Although the remake had a few laughs, this is by far funnier. When an ex pro quarterback goes to prison, a sadistic warden asks him to put together a team of inmates to play his guards. Burt Reynolds is great and the movie is full of laughs. This is a great football movie and a great comedy.

3. Bad News Bears (1976)

bad-news-bears.jpg

You simply can’t beat a movie in which kids curse and their coach is a drunk. The remake wasn’t nearly as good as the original and Walter Matthau is great as Coach Buttermaker. You just have to love a coach that has his team cleaning pools and mixing him cocktails.

2. Slap Shot

No other hockey movie can ever compare to the greatness that is Slap Shot. A struggling hockey team finds success using constant violence and fighting. The Hanson Brothers are by far my favorites, 3 goofy brothers who fight and check their asses off on the ice. The movie is very aged but it’s still amazing.

1. Caddyshack

caddyshack.jpg

Words cannot describe the greatness of this movie. A golf course has to deal with their assortment of crazy caddies, a brash new member (Rodney Dangerfield), and a destructive dancing gopher. This movie has many comedians at some of their finest, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, etc. You really have to see this movie no matter if you hate golf or love it, it’s a classic that makes me laugh every time.
